Title

Fragile Inconvenience

Description

Fragile Inconvenience was a protest installation confronting the fragility of the white, European ego I have encountered during my time in the U.K. Constantly being bombarded with cultural ignorance and prejudice, I obstructed my university’s graphic design studio with fragile tape and hand-written messages asking viewer’s to set aside their ego and whole-heartedly listen to indigenous voices.

I set this up the Sunday evening before our last lecture to monitor how people would authentically react and interact with the exhibition. Every computer, chair, flat surface, walkway, printer, and door was obstructed in some fashion, so engaging with my protest piece was unavoidable. I documented its creation and destruction to see what messages went first, and how quickly my display was to be destroyed.

Although people were cautious the first day, by day three, every piece of my exhibition was torn down and crumpled in a corner by an administrator without reason, request, or permission, emphasizing that the fragility of the white majority knows no bounds. Despite a dishearteningly short physical presence, Fragile Inconvenience’s observations and pleas to support indigenous voices and sovereignty will be remembered by those who witnessed it.
